On 16 February 2025, my revered guru Dr. Umayalpuram K Sivaraman arranged my mrudangam arangetram at Chennai, where my first guru was present on this occasion. I consider this as a great moment in my artistic career.
With extensive concert training and continued mentorship from my current guru, I hope to make a name in the realm of carnatic music. For me to achieve this, I pray to Almighty and my gurus to crown my endeavors with success.
Alongside my musical pursuits, I am currently in my second year of a dual degree at Monash University, undertaking a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Bachelor of Commerce.
A legendary figure in Carnatic music, Dr. Sivaraman is renowned for his unparalleled mastery of the Mrudangam. Born in 1935 in Umayalpuram, Tamil Nadu, he has been honored with numerous accolades, including the Padma Vibhushan and the Sangeetha Kalanidhi. His illustrious career spans over eight decades, during which he has accompanied countless maestros and contributed significantly to the evolution of Mrudangam playing. Under his guidance since 2015, I continue to learn and delve deep into the intricacies of rhythm and performance.
A devoted disciple of Dr. Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman and earlier trained by Kumbakonam Rajappa Iyer, Shri Sridhar Chari has performed for over four decades across India, Australia, and New Zealand, earning acclaim for his tonal clarity and musical sensitivity. He was honoured with the Victorian Multicultural Award of Excellence in 2011. Based in Melbourne, he leads the Laya Vidhya Centre, where he teaches Mridangam and flute.
